Dr Anish Ambaram
Specialist Pulmonologist
Dr Anish Ambaram is a Specialist Physician and Pulmonologist, and part of the team at the Gateway Centre for Respiratory and Gastrointestinal Disease. Dr Ambaram graduated with his medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand in 1998 before going on to complete his internship at Johannesburg General Hospital in 1999. He thereafter completed his community service with the Emergency Medical and Rescue Service in KZN, obtaining his Diploma in Primary Emergency Care in 2000.
In 2004, Dr Ambaram became a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa after completing his post-graduate training in Internal Medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He then went on to specialise in Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital and King Edward VIII Hospital in 2005, before becoming a Senior Specialist Pulmonologist in 2007. He was subsequently promoted to Principal Specialist and head of Department of Pulmonology and Critical Care at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital in 2009 until he commenced full time private practice in 2014.
As a pulmonologist, Dr Anish Ambaram specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory conditions that affect the chest. He has published both in local and international peer-reviewed medical journals and has written book chapters in Respiratory textbooks. Dr Ambaram has interest in interventional bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound in the diagnosis of respiratory disease. He also has an interest in sleep-related breathing disorders and has provided a full time diagnostic sleep laboratory service in KZN since 2007.
Dr Ambaram is a member of the South African Thoracic Society(SATS) and Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) as well as a member of the European Respiratory Society (ERS).
